Tekeze- Atbara Regional Conference on Water Related Studies

Tekeze-Atbara, All that we Share and Much 

 

A regional conference on “Tekeze Atbara Water Related Studies” organized by HRC-Sudan, EiWR-AAU and IHE Delft was held in Khartoum on 24-26 March 2019.

Opening speeches and welcoming remarks were delivered by Conference Organizers, H.E Ato Shiferaw Jarso-Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Sudan and H.E Dr. Osman Eltom Hamad -Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation, and Electricity of Sudan.

The conference was attended by project partners, main stakeholders, embassies of Ethiopia and Sudan and participants from various fields: academia, research community, policy makers, as well as practitioners which provided an excellent environment to exchange knowledge, and discuss research outputs and its impact on the ground.

The conference is an important milestone in Tekeze-Atbara Project implementation marking the successful completion of Phase 1: “River basin simulation for improved transboundary water management in the Nile: Case study of the Tekeze-Atbara sub-basin” and announcing the launching of Phase 2: Research on institutional set-ups for transboundary water management in the same basin.

The third day of the conference was a visit to the historic site of the “Merowe Pyramids”, built around 4000 years ago, on the Eastern Bank of the Nile, at 200 km north of Khartoum. Although recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet they remain relatively unknown.
